A volcano in Chile erupted for the first time in 2,000 years. Chaiten’s eruption sent 6 inches of ash across the Patagonian region and forced 4,500 people to flee their homes.
Residents were evacuated to Chiloe Island by boat. “We have completed the first phase of the operation, which was the evacuation of practically all of the local population,” said Interior Minister Edmundo Perez Yoma. “We don’t know if this is a situation that will last days, or weeks or even more.”
