Irvine Robbins, the co-founder of ice-cream empire Baskin-Robbins, died Monday at the age of 90.
Robbins, who opened his first ice cream store in 1945, died at his home in Rancho Mirage,
Robbins originally offered only 21 flavors of ice cream. He joined forces with brother-in-law Burton Baskin to form Baskin-Robbins.
Baskin-Robbins introduced the notion that people should be able to sample the ice cream until they found a flavor they wanted. Favorites such as Pink Bubblegum, Jamoca and Pralines ‘n Cream have been sampled ever since with the store’s iconic pink spoons.
