Typhoon Conson Slams into Philippines, at least 22 Dead while Several Remain Missing

At least 22 people have been confirmed dead and as many as 57 remain missing after Typhoon Conson slammed into the Philippines, flooding streets with heavy rains and knocking down power lines and trees behind winds that topped 75 mph.

While meteorologists had suggested Manila would avoid serious damage yet the capital city was among the hardest hit and it could be days before power is returned to normal. As it stands more than half the main island is without power, leaving millions without electricity.

The power of the typhoon caught many by surprise as several fishermen were caught at sea at the time it struck. Officials are now saying many of those fishermen are missing.

President Benigno Aquino has expressed sharp criticism at the meteorologists who suggested Manila would be spared damage, insisting the city would have been better prepared had they been given proper warning.
