BP Delaying Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Test to Review Safety and Effectiveness

BP has been forced to delay a vital test on its ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico after it was decided experts needed more time to review and ensure the safety and effectiveness of the test.

Since April oil has been pouring nearly unobstructed into the Gulf waters, putting intense pressure on BP to find a permanent solution to sealing the ruptured well. It was believed BP would have that solution in place by positioning a tighter-fitting seal cap on the well but that now has to wait to ensure the results will be favorable.

It could be another 24 hours before that seal cap is put in place and pressure tests are run. Those tests will determine if, with the seal cap on, pressure mounts in the well or if the pressure remains low. If the pressure is high then it would indicate there were no other leaks and the cap could be sealed.

If it is determined that the pressure in the well is low then BP will continue to keep ships in the area to collect the oil.
