Barack Obama avoided any collapse in his bid to earn the Democratic Party presidential nomination as he captured the North Carolina primary in convincing fashion on Tuesday.
Obama was holding a 64 to 34 percent lead over rival Hillary Clinton in the Tar Heel State with 4 percent of the precincts reporting. The win virtually guarantees Obama that he will head to the Democratic National Convention with a significant lead in delegates, a fact that won’t be lost on the superdelegates who will likely decide the nominee.
Heading into Tuesday’s primaries Obama held a 1,745 to 1,608 lead in delegates with North Carolina offering 115 delegates and Indiana an additional 72.
Clinton was holding slight lead in the Hoosier State but the race was still too close to call.
