Wednesday marked a potentially new direction for Russia as Dmitry Medvedev was inaugurated as the country’s new president following the end of Vladimir Putin’s eight-year run.
Medvedev surprised many by pledging to pay close attention to Russia’s civil rights issues while continuing to press the economic policies of his predecessor. The 42-year-old leader addressed this goal, expressing he would continue “the development of civil and economic freedom.”
He spoke specifically about those civil liberties stating, “Human rights and freedoms ... are deemed of the highest value for our society and they determine the meaning and content of all state activity.”
Shortly after inauguration Medvedev nominated Putin to be prime minister. That nomination will go before a parliamentary vote on Thursday but his approval is almost guaranteed.
