George McGovern, a former U.S. Senator who supported Sen. Hillary Clinton, officially announced his endorsement for Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday.
McGovern, the Senator of South Dakota from 1963-1981, urged Clinton to drop out of the race after losing to Obama in the North Carolina primary.
McGovern said it's virtually impossible for Clinton to win the nomination after the North Carolina and Indiana primary results.
McGovern said he is calling former President Clinton to tell him of the decision and adds that he remains close friends with the Clintons.
McGovern, 85, was the Democratic presidential candidate in 1972 and lost to Republican Richard Nixon. Clinton, 60, worked on McGovern's campaign while a law student at Yale University.
