Illinois Man Killed While Trying to Shield Daughter from Erratic Driver

An Illinois man was killed late Monday and his daughter severely injured when a car, driven by a man believed to be under the influence of a controlled substance, jumped a curb and struck the two while they were walking to a McDonald’s restaurant.

According to police Joseph Richardson had been walking with his 4-year-old daughter when the car jumped the curb. Police said Richardson grabbed his daughter and took the full weight of the accident, shielding his daughter from the car.

Joseph Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene while his daughter, Kaniyah, was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital and remains in serious condition. Richardson was the father of three children, all under the age of ten.

Police have charged 32-year-old Angelo Thomas with two felony counts of aggravated DUI and will likely face additional charges.
