A massive sinkhole in Daisette, Texas continues to grow and has reached at least 600 feet long and 200 feet deep. The sinkhole has already swallowed oil field equipment and several vehicles. No homes have been reached yet.
Regulators continue to monitor the area and investigators are checking pipelines to determine if any regulations may have been violated to cause the sinkhole.
“Right now we’re not concerned about any kind of explosion or any kind of hazard. We are monitoring some other things around the area to make sure everyone’s OK," said the coordinator of the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management.
Daisetta is located 60 miles northeast of Houston. The town’s history as a major oil field may be related to the sinkhole. Authorities believe the hole may have been caused by the collapse of an old salt dome where oil and other natural resources are stored underground. Daisette sits on a salt dome.
