Massive Sinkhole in Daisetta, Texas Keeps Growing

A sinkhole in Daisetta, Texas is growing, according to reports on Thursday. The sinkhole has grown to be 600 feet long and 200 feet deep.

Daisetta, which is 60 miles northeast from Houston, TX, is known to be an oil town, which may have caused the sinkhole. The ground might have caved in because of the collapse of an old salt dome where oil brine and natural gas are stored underground, officials said. Daisetta sits on a salt dome, one of the most common types of traps for oil.

There have been no reports of damage to any houses, but the sinkhole has swallowed a few telephone poles, some oil field equipment and a tractor.

Sinkholes are rare and often take up to two weeks to stabilize.
