A candle light vigil for 20-year-old UNC Charlotte sophomore Irina “Ira” Yarmolenko will be held this evening at the Belk Tower on the UNC Charlotte campus at 7:00 p.m.
Yarmolenko was found dead on Monday along the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly. Police are still looking for clues into her death and tying to identify possible suspects.
Described as a selfless friend who do anything to make somebody’s life better, Yarmolenko was seen at a coffee shop near the UNCC campus at 10:00 a.m. Her body was discovered shortly after 1:00 p.m. by a jet skier. Now police are trying to piece together what transpired in those few hours.
Yarmolenko had been planning to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill following this semester to pursue a degree in public health.
Thursday night’s vigil will be followed by a visitation on Friday in Chapel Hill and her funeral has been scheduled for Saturday at the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
