Gambian Judge Sentences Eight Men to Death for Involvement in Alleged Coup Plot

Eight men have been sentenced to death by a Gambian judge after they were found guilty of treason related to an alleged plot to overthrow President Yahya Jammeh last year.

The men entered the courtroom accused of securing arms, ammunition and mercenaries and in announcing his verdict judge Emmanuel Amadi ruled “After going through the evidence of the prosecution and the defense, I find all the persons guilty and accordingly sentence them to death on all three counts.”

All eight men will have 30 days to appeal the verdict but if that is denied they will become the first men to be executed in The Gambia since 2007.
