BP Says Ruptured Oil Well in Gulf of Mexico No Longer Leaking

BP has said that their ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is no longer leaking; offering hope that company may finally have found a permanent solution to what has become the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

That disaster began on April 20 when an explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig caused the well to rupture. Since that date more than a million barrels of oil have flown freely into the waters, destroying wildlife and wrecking the economies of the towns and cities along the Gulf Coast.

Thursday’s announcement came shortly after BP fitted the well with a tighter cap but the company will continue to run pressure tests on the well to ensure there are no other leaks. Those tests could last another 48 hours.

President Barack Obama expressed cautious optimism about the news, saying it was a “positive sign” but he held off on declaring it a success.
