Hezbollah Takes Control of Large Areas of Beirut

Deadly clashes between Iranian-backed Hezbollah and Lebanon’s pro-government forces has left at least 11 dead and more than 30 injured as the two sides have exchanged heavy gunfire in the streets of Beirut over the past three days.

Hezbollah, a Shiite political movement that has received strong backing from Iran, grabbed control of the streets earlier this week after Lebanon began targeting Hezbollah’s military communications network.

The Shiite militia quickly grabbed control of media outlets and shut down television and radio broadcasts and has become the dominant force in west Beirut, controlling access in and out of the city and blocking access to the airport as well.
