The Defense Department has revealed that the government of Myanmar has agreed to allow one military plane to drop off relief aid for the country, six days after a devastating cyclone left more than 23,000 dead and left more than 1 million homeless.
According to the Pentagon the military junta that rules Myanmar has backed off its original stance to block U.S. aid.
Earlier today the U.N. announced that it would be resuming relief efforts on Saturday after they had suspended work following the government’s seizure of food and supplies.
Cyclone Nargis tore through Myanmar and its Irrawaddy delta almost one week ago. Some estimates have placed the death toll in excess of 100,000 but exact numbers wouldn’t be available for some time as access to several areas has remained blocked.
