Austrian Man to Remain Jailed for Keeping Daughter Captive in Basement

Joseph Fritzl, the Austrian man suspected of keeping his daughter locked up in a basement for 24 years and fathering her seven children, was ordered to remain behind bars by a judge on Friday.

The judge determined that Fritzl should remain in prison prior to his trial. While the 73-year-old has not been formally charged with any crimes investigators are still gathering information related to rape, incest, coercion, and the death of a child.

Fritzl is believed to have incinerated the body of one of the children after it died in infancy.

Details about Fritzl’s double-life began to surface in late April after he was forced to take the 19-year-old daughter he shared with his captive daughter to the hospital. The teenager had been suffering from a severe infection and the hospital requested the mother to appear. Fritzl then brought his daughter to the hospital on April 26 and she told hospital officials what had happened to her.

On April 29 Fritzl was confined to prison and he is now awaiting charges and a trial. Accoding to police Fritzl has admitted to incest and incarceration.
