Serbia Heads to Polls in General Election on Sunday

In what is being billed as the most important election since Slobodan Milosevic was overthrown in 2000 nearly seven million Serbians are expected to head to the polls on Sunday for the country’s general election.

At stake could be Serbia’s inclusion in the European Union and in effect the recognition of Kosovo as an independent nation.

President Boris Tadic’s Democratic Party favors the Serbia’s integration into the EU and believes that they could stave off Kosovo’s independence yet Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica’s nationalist Democratic Party of Serbia is adamantly opposed to joining the EU because of the West’s favoring of Kosovo’s independence.

Since Kosovo declared independence on Feb. 17 nearly 40 countries have recognized them as an independent country, several of those belong to the European Union. That has bolstered nationalist and ultra nationalist parties to call for a vote against Tadic and pro-western ideals.

Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 8:00 p.m. Official results are expected on May 15.
