BP Encouraged by First Round of Tests on Ruptured Oil Well in Gulf of Mexico

BP has said the initial tests on the cap placed on the ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico have produced favorable results, giving hope that the company may be nearing a real solution to permanently stopping the oil leak.

Oil has been pouring into the Gulf since April 20 when an explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig ruptured the well. That explosion killed 11 oil workers and has lead to the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, devastating much of the marine life in the area and threatening to destroy the wetlands along the Gulf Coast.

Initial tests on Thursday’s capping has shown a steady rise in pressure, a positive sign as it indicates there may not be any more leaks in the well. Engineers have expressed concern that too much pressure could cause another rupture, making the BP tests extremely important over the next 36 hours.

While news of the oil leak stoppage has been met with optimism there remains an air of caution concerning how close BP is to permanently sealing the well.

President Barack Obama, after learning of the oil leak stoppage, stated “It is important we don't get ahead of ourselves.”
