Get the Scoop on National Ice Cream Month

Weather Trends International

July is proclaimed National Ice Cream Month with the third Sunday in July being National Ice Cream Day (July 18th for 2010).  Who selected July as Ice Cream Month—the Dairy Council or Ben and Jerry’s?  No, it was actually our 40th President, Ronald Reagan.  In 1984, he realized the popularity of ice cream was on the rise in the US and felt that it should be celebrated accordingly.  In fact, in the USA, more ice cream is consumed per head than any other country in the world- 90% of the nation’s population consumes ice cream.  The US ice cream industry generates more than $21 billion in annual sales and 9% of the milk produced by US dairy farmers is used in ice-cream goods.  Most popular flavors? The 3 top flavors are vanilla (28.7%), chocolate (10.4%), and cookies&cream (4.4%).

Weather Trends International had forecasted this summer to be warmer than usual, especially for the Eastern half of the U.S., with the hottest start to July in over 20 years. This will translate into higher sales for dairy retailers and suppliers as a 1 degree increase in temperature results in up to 240,000 more units of ice cream sold each week.  For example in New York City, July 2010 is running +8˚ F warmer than last year which equates to a +16% increase in ice cream sales. Rich Woolley, Vice President of Operations at Weather Trends, stated, “At New York City’s Central Park in Manhattan, July 2009 was the 6th coldest July on record and there were no days in the month where the temperature was above 90F, so this year will bring a wholesale change for ice cream demand.  This year is projected to see 15 days above 90, and if the heat continues through the end of the month, July 2010 will either be the hottest or second hottest July on record.” Our clients, who had this business weather intelligence forecast 11 months ago, were able to use our long range guidance to successfully plan for inventory, schedule production and time promotions around this key time of year, thus maximizing sales potential.

So this Sunday, July 18th on National Ice Cream Day, sit back, relax and enjoy one of our favorite summertime treats.  Who screams for Ice Cream---We do!!
