Typhoon Conson has hit southern China, making landfall on the southern tip of the island province of Hainan. Just days ago Conson battered the Philippines, killing 38 people and causing massive flooding, before moving over the waters and being downgraded to a tropical storm.
By Friday the storm had once again gained typhoon strength and led to all flights into Hainan being suspended as were all shipping and ferry operations.
With the torrential rains brought by Conson many in China fear extensive flooding as it moves across the southwestern region of the country. China is already dealing with some of the worst flooding in more than a decade and Conson is expected to add to that misery as the Yangtze River threatens to spill over.
If that were to happen the death toll could hit extreme numbers as the last time China saw flooding on such a level was 1998 when more than 4,000 people were killed as a result of the Yangtze floods.
