China Earthquake Death Toll up to 7,000; 900 Students Buried in Collapsed School

The death toll related to the magnitude-7.8 earthquake that struck China’s southwestern Sichuan province continues to rise as the numbers have now hit 7,000 and that total is expected to increase.

Rescue workers continue to dig through rubble searching for those who have been trapped by collapsed buildings and homes. More than 900 students were believed to be buried under their fallen school, 50 bodies have already been pulled from the disaster.

With the quake striking midday on Monday several offices and schools were packed, causing the death toll to be much greater.

In the county of Beichuan an estimated 80 percent of buildings were destroyed and an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 people dead. Because communication too many areas has been cut it has been difficult to get an accurate death total.

The quake was felt as far as Beijing, some 930 miles away. Vietnam, Thailand and Pakistan reported feeling the quake as well.
