Detergent Suicide Kills Three More Men

Three Japanese men, in their 20s and 30s were discovered in a car Monday morning dead.  Police officials suspect that they are the latest victims of a string of suicides involving a lethal gas created from household detergent.  According to Tominori Hirata, police spokesman, the three were found in a car in a parking lot by a passerby.

Hirata states, “We found bottles of bath and toilet detergent in the car.”  He added that the cause of death is believed to be the result of inhaling hydrogen sulfide gas that was made with the cleaning chemicals, a practice that has killed over 50 people in Japan last month.

A Kyodo News agency reported that a sign was found on the car that read, “Hydrogen sulfide gas being emitted.”

Japanese police have began cracking down on internet sites that give detailed instructions on how to create the gas using household products in an effort to thwart the increasing number of suicides.  There is also a fear of the potential the gas has to harm innocent bystanders or rescuers.  One man committed suicide by inhaling the gas, resulting in toxic fumes that pushed 350 neighbors from their homes.

Japan holds the record for having the ninth highest suicide rate.  The Japanese government claims that 32,155 people killed themselves in 2006, resulting in the spending of $220 million for anti-suicide programs to help those suffering from depression and other mental conditions.
