The U.S. have landed their first relief plane for the victims of the devastating cyclone that hit Myanmar more than a week ago after finally securing permission from the country’s ruling military junta.
The plane landed in Rangoon and was carrying much need water and food as well as mosquito netting that will hopefully prevent an outbreak of diseases.
It has been nine days since Cyclone Nargis hit the low-lying Irrawaddy Delta but Myanmar’s government has been leery about accepting relief help from outside agencies and countries. That delay has likely cost the lives of thousands of victims and with the death toll now at 32,000 and more than 30,000 missing the total is expected to rise.
Several agencies have said that the death toll has hit 100,000 and could easily surpass 1 million if the government doesn’t allow proper aid and medicine to reach the victims.
The military junta has insisted they were accepting aid but were not accepting aid workers. This has led to many agencies refusing to send supplies out of fear the government would just confiscate the items.
