More than 500 residents were forced from their homes in central Florida as 3 wildfires burned in the area. Nearly 600 acres in Volusia County were burned. Another fire in Cocoa burned more than 100 acres.
Mandatory evacuations were ordered in Daytona Beach and Brevard County as firefighters struggled to get the blazes under control. Windy and dry conditions were affecting the fire departments efforts.
“Control is extremely difficult, and there’s basically several small subdivisions in the area and fires burning, in some cases, very close to the homes,” said Florida’s Division of Forestry spokesman Timber Weller.
