The corruption investigation of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert intensified on Monday as police raided Jerusalem’s city hall and seized several documents that may prove the government official illegally accepted cash from a Jewish American donor.
Israel is in the midst of celebrating their 60th anniversary as an independent state yet the continued investigation into Olmert has cast a dark cloud over the festivities. Anti-fraud teams are concentrating on Olmert’s term as Jerusalem’s mayor, a period that stretched from 1993-2003.
Olmert has denied any wrong doing and vowed to resign if he is indicted. An indictment would likely throw peace talks with Palestinians into the dark. According to some reports the majority of Israelis don’t believe Olmert is capable of brokering a peace deal while he is under investigation.
Olmert is said to have received hundreds of thousands of dollars from New York businessman Morris Talansky. Those payoffs are said to be linked to real estate deals yet Talansky has said the money was only provided to back Olmert’s mayoral campaign.
