Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced the country would be holding its general election on August 21, saying the poll between her Labor Party and the conservative opposition Liberal Party would be “tough and close.”
Gillard, who was just elected Labor leader three weeks ago after the ousting of Kevin Rudd, said “This election is about the choice as to whether we move Australia forward or go back.”
Among other things, the August election will focus on the economy, immigration, health and climate change, all issues with which Australia has been struggling.
While Gillard has been billed as a viable leader by her Labor Party members opposition leader Tony Abbott has insisted she represents the “same dud policies” as Rudd. Recent polls have shown Labor holding a slight advantage over their opposition but their popularity has been slipping and Gillard will need to establish a real sense of direction if she is to lead her party to victory.
