BP Says Pressure Tests on Ruptured Oil Well “Giving Us More and More Confidence”

Following a series of pressure tests on their ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico vice-president of BP, Kent Wells, has said the new tighter fitting cap has stopped the leak and given the company “more and more confidence.”

Tests on the new cap have shown that pressure inside the well has been building slowly, a positive sign that there were no other leaks. The tests on the well’s integrity began on Thursday and by Saturday Wells said, “We're feeling more confident that we have integrity.”

BP has been in desperate need of good news as the ruptured well, pouring oil into the Gulf of Mexico since an explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20, has led to the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

The oil leak has destroyed marine life and wetlands along the Gulf’s coastline while causing massive economic problems to those who depend upon the waters for their way of life. BP has already said the cost associated with the disaster has reached $3.5 billion.
