Summer enrichment programs give some balance to a long summer vacation according to Bobbi DePorter, president of one of the country’s leading academic summer camps, SuperCamp. SuperCamp’s residential summer camps are held for 10 days at college campuses across the U.S.
“Our 10-day camps represent only about 12 to 15 percent of a student’s time off during the summer,” says Ms. DePorter. “By allotting this amount of time to a learning and life skills camp, parents are able to give their sons and daughters valuable summer enrichment and still let them have plenty of time to kick back, vacation with family and just be a kid.”
Plus, DePorter says that 10 days at SuperCamp is the highlight of the summer for a lot of campers because of the new friends they make, the fun, interactive physical challenges they undertake, and the confidence and inspiration they gain. Students who have attended SuperCamps’ youth and teen summer camps support DePorter’s statement.
One recent graduate sums of the feelings of many when she says, "Last year before I went to SuperCamp, I thought of it as a punishment, like summer school, and I really didn't want to be working over my break, but when I arrived people were really energetic and really welcoming. And I soon realized it was not only about academics; it was also about how to communicate and relate to other people. I made really great friendships and I still talk to those people all the time. And I learned effective learning and study skills that help me in high school. I got the best grades that I have ever gotten and I really look forward to coming back this year."
The eight colleges to host SuperCamp’s summer camp programs are Stanford University, Cornell University, Pitzer College (one of The Claremont Colleges in the Los Angeles area), Cal State San Marcos in north San Diego County, Colorado College in Colorado Springs, the University of Washington in Seattle, Wake Forest University and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
SuperCamp offers four grade-specific programs: the 10-day Junior Forum for students entering grades 6-8 in the fall, the 10-day Senior Forum for students entering grades 9-12, the 7-day Youth Forum for kids entering grades 4-5 and Quantum U for incoming college students. The dynamic learning environment is designed to maximize long-term retention of the information provided.
