Remy Ma Sentenced to Eight Years in Prison

Remy Ma, the Grammy Award-nominated rapper, was sentenced to eight years in jail on Tuesday.

The sentencing came just one day after her planned wedding to fellow rapper Papoose was thwarted. Rikers Island officials called the wedding off due to a misunderstanding about an alleged skeleton key Papoose was wearing when he appeared at the prison.

On March 27, Remy Ma, whose real name is Reminisce Smith, was found guilty of two charges of assault, in connection with an argument she had with a friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, last July, during which Barnes-Joseph was shot two times while the two women struggled in a car.

The New York Supreme Court sentenced Remy Ma, 26, to eight years in prison on Tuesday for charges of assault, weapons possession and attempted coercion. The prosecution had originally requested a 13-year sentence, which was significantly less than the potential amount of 25 years in jail.

Remy Ma, whose original rap name was Remy Martin but changed it due to legal reasons with the liquor company, was very emotional during the sentencing, citing that her bid in prison would have a large effect on her seven-year old son.
