Myanmar Blocks Relief Aid as Food Shipments Back Up

The ruling military junta in Myanmar has blocked foreign relief workers from bringing much-needed aid to survivors of last week’s cyclone.

Reports of emergency supplies piling up at Myanmar’s main airport added to the frustration of the survivors, who were still without food or clean water ten days after Cyclone Nargis devastated the Irrawaddy River delta.

United Nations officials fear the number of deaths from the cyclone will continue to rise unless a major relief effort is allowed to move forward.

More that 34,000 have been confirmed dead while 28,000 are still missing.  Those numbers could almost double unless aid reaches the survivors quickly, according to the UN.
