Earthquake Leaves Dam in Danger of Breaking; Thousands in Danger

A hydroelectric dam located along the ridge of the Tibetan plateau has been damaged in China’s worst earthquake in half a century.

Cracks in the Zipingku Dam pose a serious threat to the center of relief operations at Dujiangyan where more than 100,000 military and tens of thousands of relief workers are working to free those trapped in the rubble.

Efforts to repair the damage to the dam has pulled thousands of military personnel away from rescue operations.

Monday’s 7.9 magnitude quake is China’s worst in more than 50 years. More than 15,000 are dead, and thousands more are still buried beneath debris.
