John Tyler Hammons, 19, Elected Mayor of Muskogee

A 19-year-old freshman at the University of Oklahoma was elected mayor of the city of Muskogee on Tuesday. John Tyler Hammons beat former mayor Hershel Ray McBride with 70 percent of the vote.

“The public placing their trust in me it the greatest, humbling and most awesome experience I’ve ever had in my life,” Hammons says. “Being elected does not change my desire to continue my education. We will schedule our time in an appropriate fashion so that I can be mayor and stay in school.”

The teen will be sworn in next week and says he plans to transfer to a college closer to Muskogee.

Muskogee, whose population is near 38,000, is located in the northeastern region of Oklahoma.
