Myanmar Facing Potential of Second Cyclone

It has been less than two weeks since Myanmar was slammed by Cyclone Nargis, a storm that has claimed at least 35,000 lives and left an additional 30,000 missing, and now the ravaged country is facing a second cyclone that could hit the area within 24 hours.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center has said, “the potential for the development of a significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours is good.” This could add further devastation for a country that is still struggling to provide relief for the more than two million displaced citizens affected by Nargis.

Relief efforts for those citizens have been hampered due to restrictions placed by the country’s military junta as well as significant problems navigating the destroyed infrastructure and actually reaching the devastated areas.

The second cyclone is said to be on track to cross over the Irrawaddy delta, the same low-lying area that took the brunt of the first cyclone.
