The first wave of drinking water hit Barcelona Tuesday as the drought-stricken city began bringing in supplements for its drinking-water supply.
The drought affecting Barcelona’s water supply is the worst to hit the northeastern region of Catalonia in decades.
According to Catalan government officials, 63 shiploads of water will arrive each month, beginning with the first arriving from the nearby city of Tarragona.
Weeks ago, lawmakers had worked out a plan to divert water from the Ebro River into Barcelona. Protests from areas in the south of Spain hard hit by the drought led to those plans being scrapped.
