Sculpture of Julius Caesar Dates from Around 46 B.C.

A bust sculpted during the lifetime of Julius Caesar was discovered in a riverbed in southern France.

The marble sculpture, which was well preserved, is the only known bust of the living Caesar.

Discovered last autumn along the banks of the Rhone, the bust has been authenticated and dates from between 49 and 46 B.C., the period when Caesar founded the Roman colony of Arles.

Historians agree the discovery of a realistic likeness of Caesar in his fifties is and important find.
