Coal Mining Accidents in China Claim at least 38 Lives, Several Remain Trapped

Three separate accidents in Chinese coal mines have claimed at least 38 lives while leaving several more miners trapped.

The worst accident occurred in Shaanxi province after an electrical cable caught fire inside the Xiaonangou mine, killing 28 miners. Eight more miners were killed in an accident in Henan province and two more died as a result of an accident in Hunan.

A fourth accident in Gansu province has left 13 miners trapped with recovery efforts still underway.

China has a notoriously poor track record for miner safety as many of the mines are operated illegally or simply fail to meet the safety rules outlined by the government.
