After strapping on a homemade jet-powered device, a Swiss pilot became a human ‘rocket man’ after gave a public demonstration of his personal flying machine.
A commercial pilot for Swiss Air, Yves Rossy has spent five years working with sponsors to perfect this form of human flight.
Although he had many “whoops” moments, Rossy described his first public performance as “absolutely excellent,” turning figure eights, executing a perfect 360-degree roll, and exceeding speeds of more than 180 miles per hour while soaring high above the
Rossy estimates that he and his sponsors, which include Swiss watch company Hublot, spent more than $190,000 on the apparatus which combines four jet turbines with rigid eight-foot wings and a heat-resistant flight suit.
