With more than 20,000 confirmed dead and tens of thousands still trapped under fallen buildings, schools and homes officials in China have now estimated that the death toll tied to the 7.9 earthquake that struck Monday could top 50,000.
Three days after the massive quake struck rescue workers are just now reaching areas of the devastated province of Sichuan, home to more than 20 million people and where the greatest number of casualties are expected.
While the first three days of rescue efforts have saved several lives many believe the next phase of recovering bodies has begun.
China has been quick to stem the outbreak of diseases as they have provided survivors and refugees immunization shots to prevent illnesses
