Italy Cracks Down on Illegal Immigrants, Hundreds Arrested

In what appears to be a promise fulfilled by right-wing Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi police have arrested several hundred suspected illegal immigrants in raids launched in Rome, Naples and northern Italy.

Berlusconi and his new government have promised to change the policy on illegal immigrants and over the past week police have apprehended several Albanians, Greeks, Chinese, Romania, and Moroccan immigrants.

Many Italians believe the Roma (Gypsies) communities are responsible for a large portion of crimes inside Rome, an issued Berlusconi vowed to address.

Several of those detained have been ordered expelled.
