The Pentagon official left open the possibility he could step aside at a later point if issues of his neutrality impeded progress in trying the cases before the tribunal.
Those cases include an arraignment scheduled for June 5 for the confessed mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks and four alleged co-conspirators.
“The focus should not go away from the fact that these five cases are going ahead jointly,” Hartmann said.
