Guantanamo Legal Adviser to Remain on War Crimes Tribunal

Air Force Brig. Gen. Thomas Hartmann announced Wednesday he had no plans to resign as legal adviser for the war-crimes tribunals at Guantanamo.

Hartmann had been barred from participating in the trial of the first Guantanamo inmate to go before the tribunal after a judge questioned whether he could remain impartial in the case.

The Pentagon official left open the possibility he could step aside at a later point if issues of his neutrality impeded progress in trying the cases before the tribunal.

Those cases include an arraignment scheduled for June 5 for the confessed mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks and four alleged co-conspirators.

“The focus should not go away from the fact that these five cases are going ahead jointly,” Hartmann said.
