Colombia says No US Base Planned for Venezuela Border

Venezuelan President Hugh Chavez issued a warning to Colombia over reports that a U.S. military base was planned for a region bordering the two countries.

Even though no such plan had been announced by the U.S. or Colombia, Chavez threatened to revive a decades-old conflict over the La Guajira region if plans for a military base there should move forward.

U.S. officials recently commented on the closing of a drug-monitoring operation in Ecuador and listed Colombia as a possible site for a new location. No mention was made of moving any U.S. operations to the La Guajira region.

Relations between the two countries remained strained after documents were uncovered last week implicating Chavez in arming and financing Colombian rebels. Chavez has denied the allegations.
