The California Supreme Court has thrown out the state’s law banning gay marriage, opening the door for the Golden State to join Massachusetts as the only two states recognizing gay marriages.
The 4-3 decision acknowledged that the current system of domestic partnerships for gay unions did not provide the same benefits of a marriage available to those of the opposite sex. Chief Justice Ron George noted, “Under these circumstances, we cannot find that retention of the traditional definition of marriage constitutes a compelling state interest.”
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he will respect the state’s Supreme Court decision.
