Queen Tours Mosque during State Visit to Turkey

The Queen of England covered her hair during a rare visit to a mosque Thursday on the second day of her state visit to Turkey.

Accompanied by the “first lady” of Turkey, the Queen visited The Green Mosque and observed a moment of silence during readings from the Koran.

The Queen’s appearance at the mosque was noted by Turkey’s largely Muslim population, many of whom expressed appreciation for her respect of their religious rights.

A tour of the tomb of Sultan Mehmet I rounded out the day’s events for the Queen while the Duke of Edinburgh toured a local car factory.

During the Queen’s first state visit in 1971, tens of thousands of Turks turned out. Thursday’s visit by the royal couple drew a much smaller crowd.
