Nearly two weeks after Cyclone Nargis ravaged the Irrawaddy delta and destroyed much of Myanmar the country’s state-run television has reported the death toll to be near 78,000 with an additional 56,000 people still missing.
While those killed directly by the storms has been staggering many relief agencies fear the final figure will be even more so due to the country’s refusal to distribute aid and medicine to the nearly 2.5 million citizens who have been left with nothing.
The military junta that controls the country has been accused of hoarding relief aid and refusing to allow emergency workers into the country.
The United Nations has already said more than 100,000 have died and that number could skyrocket as the millions of survivors have yet to be provided with clean water, food, shelter and medical care.
