The controversial presidential election in Zimbabwe took yet another unpopular turn on Friday as the electoral commission announced the runoff between President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai wouldn’t take place until June 27.
Tsvangirai, head of the Movement for Democratic Change, had wanted the runoff to take place next Friday and called the decision to delay the vote “irresponsible” but vowed to fight on.
According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission a runoff should be scheduled within 21 days of an election. The official election results were announced on May 2, making the deadline for a runoff May 23 yet they extended the deadline beyond the legal limit.
Tsvangirai finished ahead of Mugabe in the March 29 vote yet according to officials he did not carry enough votes to avoid a runoff, something Tsvangirai has contested.
