Ellen DeGeneres and actress Portia de Rossi plan to get married, according to an announcement DeGeneres made on her talk show Thursday.
DeGeneres, the host of the daytime talk show "Ellen", and de Rossi are taking full advantage of the recent ruling made by the California Supreme Court, which legalized same-sex marriages Thursday.
De Rossi, 35, who was in the studio during the announcement, and DeGeneres, 50, were applauded by audience members. The show will air Friday.
DeGeneres became one of television's first openly gay stars. In 1997, she brought her character on the ABC sitcom "Ellen" out of the closet, making the show the first on prime-time network TV to have an openly gay lead.
During that time, DeGeneres was in a high-profile relationship with actress Anne Heche. The couple split up in 2000. DeGeneres and de Rossi have been together since 2004.
