China Drafts Plan for Adoptions of Children Left Orphaned After Quake

According to state officials, the Chinese government is preparing a plan to allow adoptions for the massive number of children left orphaned following Monday’s 7.9 earthquake.

Until those plans are put into place, the children will be cared for locally by the ministry of civil affairs.

Several groups in China and overseas have begun inquiring about the possibility of adopting children who have been orphaned by the quake.

In 2006, the rules for foreign adoptions of Chinese babies had been stiffened and included stipulations that applicants have sound finances, stable marriages and a healthy body weight.
