A deadly outbreak of hand-foot-mouth disease in
The outbreak of the hand-foot-mouth disease on the Chinese mainland has been attributed to enterovirus 71, which causes cold-like symptoms, diarrhea and sores on the hands, feet and mouth. Severe cases in which fluid builds up on the brain can result in death.
Children are especially susceptible to the infections for which there is no treatment or vaccine. Adults with healthy immune systems are usually able to fight off the illness.
The virus can be spread through contact with bodily fluids from an infected person.
The Chinese Ministry of Health issued a mandate requiring all cases of the hand-foot-mouth disease to be reported within 24 hours. The number of cases is expected to rise as the disease is expected to peak over the warm summer months.
