The New York Yankees will be without Andy Pettitte for four to five weeks after the veteran lefty suffered a Grade 1 left groin strain in Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Pettitte was forced to leave the game in the third inning after feeling significant pain while pitching to Kelly Shoppach.
He was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital where he was given an MRI which revealed the Grade 1 strain. Making matters worse for the Yankees is the fact Pettitte has been arguably their best pitcher this year, posting an 11-2 record with a 2.88 ERA.
The club will now have to decide if they will go after another arm or try to juggle their current staff. According to GM Brian Cashman the Yankees will try Sergio Mitre next Saturday, a long reliever who has made two emergency starts for the club already this year.
