Syria Bans Full Face Veil for Female Students at Universities

Syria has announced that female students attending universities within the country will no longer be allowed to wear full face veils.

The decision, made by the minister of higher education, comes after a number of requests by students and parents asking for the ban. The decision was also backed by several women’s rights groups who have spoken out against the full face veils.

While many see the ban as a victory there are those who have claimed it is a sign that Syria is becoming more conservative as many women have returned to wearing the full face veil.

Earlier this month France’s lower house of parliament supported a ban on full face veils in public places as did Belgium. Several other countries are debating the legality of the veils and whether they pose a threat to security.
